How do body creams smell on your skin?

There are numerous factors that influence how scent of a body product develops on the skin, ranging from general health, hormones, medication, body temperature, skin type, and environment. Here are some of the things to consider and some tips for increasing the longevity of a scent.

The Factors That Can Affect The Scent On Your Skin

Skin Type

For those with oily skin, you may consider yourself lucky right now, as your skin can retain fragrance much better than those with dry skin. But having oily skin can also alter the scent in a number of ways, first by holding mainly the top notes of a fragrance, then by emphasizing certain components of the fragrance.

Dry skin, on the other hand, does not hold fragrance as long unless other factors such as environment work towards allowing the scent to last longer. When your skin is dry, fragrance (and moisturizers) tend to evaporate faster, needing reapplication to keep the scent fresh and strong. Having dry skin can also alter the way a scent smells on you, with woody notes coming out the most. Thankfully, our products hold both woody and fruity notes, and you can read more about our scent in Finding Our Signature Scent.

Environment

The environment you may be in can affect the longevity of your fragrance in ways similar to how skin type does. In humid areas, you may find that fragrance does tend to last longer on your skin, because your skin is naturally more hydrated and can hold in the scent much longer. On the other hand, hot and dry environments can cause fragrance to evaporate from your skin leading the fragrance to only last for short periods of time. Hot conditions can also cause you to sweat more, where your natural sweat can destroy the fragrance.

Hormones

The different levels of hormones in your body can affect the way you smell, and what you are smelling. We’ve all heard how pregnant women can at times be repulsed by a smell that they previously found pleasant. When a women is going through pregnancy, menopause, or even her cycle, her hormones can be so rapidly changing and affecting the sense of smell. As estrogen levels start to fall and are near their lowest, fragrances can smell pleasant and enjoyable to you. When the estrogen levels start peaking, you may find yourself overpowered by some fragrances.

3 Tips To Make Lotion Fragrance Last Longer On Your Skin

1. Moisturize twice

If you have dry skin, live in a dry and hot environment, or find that fragrance disappears from your skin quite fast, try the moisturizing twice method. First apply the moisturizer to your skin and let it fully sink in for between 3-5 minutes. Then add another layer of moisturizer to lock the product into your skin. Your skin being dehydrated is what causes the scent to disappear fast, so hydrating it with a layer first, and then adding a finishing layer on top can really secure the fragrance.

2. Store your moisturizer in a cool and dry place

A humid and hot environment can break down the fragrance in your products. Instead opt to keep your favorite fragranced products in a cool and dry environment, optimally not your bathroom. This can keep the fragrance in your products more potent and fresher as well.

3. Focus some extra moisturizer on your pulse points

Your pulse points are the areas where your body temperature changes most, such as the wrists, the nape of your neck, and back of your knees. These areas can get hotter and colder throughout the day and can in turn emit your favorite scent throughout the day.
